Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Review

The first Modern Warfare gave the series a huge reboot while ranking among the best shooters of 2007. Treyarch took the series back to world war 2 with good success. Now one year on and Infinity Ward has officially set the bar for all action games to follow.

The story picks up five years after the first with new terrorist Makarov attempting to set off a war between Russia and America. As part of the task force 141 as Gary 'Roach' Sanderson and the US army rangers as James Ramirez. It's your job to stop the terrorists and defend America. The story is filled with more emotion and betrayal this time in which there's a thin line cast between the good and the bad. Old faces like Soap Mactavish reappear and new ones are added in like Ghost and Sgt Foley. The story has enough twists and turns to make it interesting though it is disappointing that most of it is told through radio and satellite imaging.

The campaign has more missions this time but they're of a shorter length, meaning the game is still only 5 hours long. But this means nothing compared to the hugely popular online and all new spec ops mode. Missions are greatly varied for the sequel. You'll gun down enemies in tight corners, Defend objectives with sentry guns and predator missiles, sneak past guards, Utilise heavy weapons and even drive some vehicles in your quest to defeat the terrorists. Spec ops mode is a whole new mode. You'll tackle up to 22 missions with a friend, earning stars depending on the difficulty. These are based on missions from both the first and second Modern Warfare. These are very challenging and fun although you may find yourself wishing for another zombies mode or a full coop campaign even. Multiplayer is still as addictive and fun as ever but with some new additions like deathstreaks to give new players a boost, Over 10 new killstreaks upgradable perks and new equipment like throwing knives and semtex. You unlock new weapons and gear by leveling up and players can now prestige even further with more challenges, titles and emblems. New modes like demolition and capture the flag give more variety and clan tags and invites have been improved. However The online can still lag if the host has a bad connection even though a host migration system has been put in place.

Nothing has changed for the controls of Call of Duty. You still have to aim down the sights to get accurate shots, crouch or go prone. The regenerating health returns with a larger sense of brutality as the screen goes red There are about 60 to 70 weapons in the game and each can come with different sights and attachments. It's generally better to use the guns you start off with though as they're normally relevant to the current mission. Infinity Ward has jam packed the game full of set pieces and pacing. You could be sneaking past guards one moment then firing on the frontline of a washinton invasion the next. The action barely lets up during these sequences and you're given more freedom to choose how to tackle a missions in wide open areas. Do you rush the enemy or flank them? There are many choices this time around. As in previous games there are four dificulties. Recruit is easy enough but veteran is almost impossible. Be prepared for many deaths as you attempt to get the harder trophies in the game. Cheats are missing this time but you can still find intel laptops scattered around the levels. The game still remains as intense as ever and harder to put down. Most won't be able to stop playing and that indicates a great game.

Modern Warfare 2 still looks fantasic. With all the bullets flying everywhere, explosions and enemies on screen the action still runs extremly fast. Voice acting is good with clear accents and animations for death and characters still look as detailed as ever. The graphics are toned down a bit for spec ops and online but this is reasonable for keeping the game moving.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the peak of first person shooters. It stays at the top because it manages to retain what made the first Modern Warfare so good and adds many new feature. If you like shooters then you need this game. Whether you have a PS3 or 360 then you should experience this masterpiece as it really is the best shooter of 2009.
