DJ Hero Review

Ever since the release of the original Guitar Hero back in 2004, Peripheral based games have increased in popularity thanks to their unique ways to play. While some like Tony Hawk Ride have tried and failed to emulate the real thing, Freestyle games have stepped up to deliver a new experience using a brand new turntable controller and a mix of different music mixtures. It may be expensive but it's a worthy purchase for any music fan.

DJ Hero's selling point is it's turntable controller. This comes in two parts. A full 360 spinning wheel with one red, blue and green button and the left side which includes a bar and knob for crossfading and sound effects and buttons for using euphoria. The controller comes with two AA batteries to start you off. Standard controllers can also be used in both menus and playing but if you did that you would be missing out. There are many training exercises for new players and soon you'll be blazing through songs on higher difficulties. Guitar hero owners can also connect their guitar controllers and play in a duet or verses. The guitar can also be used to play songs on their own if you want the songs to be mixed The game includes over 50 songs ranging from rap eg: Eminem to some pop music. These are all mixed and matched across 15 to 20 playlists but players can make their own and tackle the mixes in any order. Playing through the mixes unlocks new characters, DJ decks, and venues that players can customise before they enter the rhythm. Multiplayer supports two players both online and off but you may have a hard time finding a local friend who has the same game. Online connection is solid with some light leaderboards but there aren't any unlocks or levels for playing online which eliminates some longevity. Thankfully like Guitar Hero there are many download packs planned after release, Keeping your interest with many of the latest songs.

DJ Hero's gameplay is similar to GH's but with many tweaks. You push the buttons to hit notes and move the wheel back and forth to perform scratches. On higher difficulties you use the cross fader to switch between the two songs in the mix which takes a lot of practice to get used to. Nailing notes and scratches racks up a score multiplier which goes towards unlocking up to 5 stars for your performance. Strangely you can't ever fail a mix in DJ Hero even if you miss every single note. This saves the hassle of having to start a mix over again Euphoria serves as the star power, activating by the large button on the left of the turntable which doubles your multiplier to get insane points. This can be filled up to 3 times by hitting all notes in a bright blue sequence Another new feature is rewinds which are built through getting a high note streak. Then you wind the wheel on the turntable backwards which lets you play a section of the mix again. This also doubles your multiplier making easy and beginner modes a bit too easy to get all 5 stars. Still Hard and Expert take many months, possibly years of practice to get right. DJ Hero has enough for both casual and hardcore players. Bring it to a party or event and many people will take interest. The controller functions very well provided it doesn't suffer too much abuse and completists will want to grab every last trophy/achievment from the game.

DJ Hero features a bright vibrant art style in both the menus and the game itself, with many different colours and effects. The euphoria fills the screen with a glistening glow and many DJ artists featured look very authentic. Up close textures and models aren't as detailed but its a small hassle. Every song has been properly put into the game with most mixes feeling just right. Some may find themselves humming or singing the tunes even when they're not playing.

DJ Hero brings in a new way to play while containing enough content to satisfy both the casual and hardcore audiences. It may be expensive but once you start playing, it won't matter the game is just fun to play as a whole and that's a sign of a great game. If you're a fan of rap music or music in general, you can't go wrong with DJ Hero.
